Asia-Pacific Rainbow Families Forum

On the 12th May 2017 Professional Wills were invited to attend the inaugural Asia-Pacific Rainbow Families Forum hosted by Planet Ally, a not-for-profit global multimedia platform which aims to inform and empower LGBTI and ally travel choices and advocacy.

There were several events over two days to coincide with the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia - the 2017 theme and focus issue being "families".  The events consisted of a number of talks, presentations and panel discussions that centered around raising awareness of the existence of rainbow families in the Asia-Pacific region and highlighting the importance of family support and social acceptance.

I had the honor of representing Professional Wills by taking part in a panel discussion together with Azan Marwah (Gilt Chambers), Ging Cristobal (OutRight International) and Stephen Page (Harrington Family Lawyers) moderated by the excellent Annemarie Evans from RTHK.

The topic of discussion was “A Legislative Overview for Rainbow Families in Asia”.  We, amongst other things, discussed the reasons as to why Wills, Living Wills, Guardianship Documents and Enduring Powers of Attorney are especially important in the context of a rainbow family.

I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion and definitely learnt a lot, particularly with regards to the various ways Surrogacy is handled across Asia. Each of the speakers shared interesting anecdotes of their own experiences of dealing and helping rainbow families who, despite some progress in being accepted, continue to experience discrimination throughout Asia-Pacific.

I deeply encourage anyone with an interest in equality and fairness to check out Planet Ally. They are a wonderful organisation that are working hard to make a difference in people’s lives and they could use all of our support.
